The Story of James Moore & Co. from UF Warrington College of Business Article

The University of Florida’s Warrington College of Business recently published a detailed feature on our history, including stories from longtime partners Bob Watson and Jay Hutto. It covers our roots, the decisions that shaped us, and the people who helped build our culture.

In 1964, Jim Moore—an accounting professor at the University of Florida—prepared a tax return for just $25. That one return was the beginning of what is now James Moore & Co., a nationally ranked accounting and consulting firm with five offices and a wide range of specialized services.

Our journey from a one-man, part-time tax practice to a Top 120 U.S. accounting firm wasn’t instant. It came through hard work, strategic growth, and people who cared deeply about doing things the right way. From the days of paper ledgers and adding machines to building out consulting divisions like Technology Services, HR Solutions, and Digital, we’ve continually focused on delivering meaningful results for our clients and communities.

But at the heart of it all? Relationships. Vision. Leadership. And a team that knows the power of thinking long term.
