New 90-Bed HCA Florida Gainesville Hospital On Track To Open In May 2026

HCA Florida is preparing to open a new 90-bed hospital in Gainesville in May 2026, marking the city’s first new hospital in 50 years. According to a report by Elliot Tritto in the Gainesville Sun, the $230 million, 205,000-square-foot facility will include 60 medical surgical beds, 30 inpatient rehab beds, four operating rooms, and comprehensive surgical, imaging, and emergency services.

The hospital will operate as an expansion of the existing HCA Florida North Florida Hospital, with staff working across both campuses under a single hospital license. Construction began in May 2024 and has employed more than 400 workers. The project is being built by Charles Perry Partners Inc.

Strategic Location And Community Impact

Located off Archer Road near I-75, the new hospital will serve patients from Gainesville and surrounding rural areas. HCA Florida North Florida Hospital COO Mark Amox noted in the report that the facility will significantly reduce travel times for residents in underserved areas. For example, patients from Williston—previously facing 30-minute drives to the nearest hospital—will now be within 15 to 20 minutes of emergency care.

The site currently houses a freestanding emergency department that opened in January 2024. Once the full hospital opens, it will offer surgical and inpatient services that are not currently available at that location.

What Makes This Facility Different

One of the hospital’s distinguishing features is its 30-bed inpatient rehabilitation unit, which will provide critical post-acute care for patients who might otherwise be transferred out of the county. According to the report, Select Medical Facility is currently the only other inpatient rehab provider in the area, and capacity constraints often require out-of-county transfers.

The hospital will also focus on spinal and orthopedic procedures, incorporating advanced surgical technology including robotic systems and AI-powered augmented reality tools. This positions the facility as a specialty care hub for complex surgical cases.

Workforce And Economic Impact

The hospital is expected to create more than 200 new jobs, including nurses, CT technicians, and surgical staff. HCA Florida plans to post job openings within the next 60 days, according to the article. Additionally, the hospital is working with the city of Gainesville to sell a parcel of land for a nearby fire station, further supporting regional emergency response infrastructure.

Why This Matters For Healthcare Leaders

This project reflects broader trends in healthcare capacity planning and market positioning. Building in underserved corridors, integrating specialty services, and leveraging advanced surgical technology are all strategies that help health systems capture market share and improve outcomes.

From a financial perspective, $230 million capital projects of this scale require careful feasibility planning, reimbursement modeling, and workforce strategy. Healthcare CFOs and administrators managing similar growth initiatives should focus on service line profitability, payer mix, and long-term operational sustainability.
