UHealth Opens AI-Powered Medical Center In North Miami-Dade

The University of Miami Health System has opened its largest outpatient facility to date—a seven-story, 363,000-square-foot medical center in North Miami-Dade that integrates artificial intelligence throughout the patient experience. According to a report by Michelle Marchante in the Miami Herald, UHealth SoLé Mia Medical Center is designed to bring comprehensive, academic-based care closer to patients in North Miami, Aventura, and surrounding communities.
The facility offers primary and specialty care across more than 30 service lines, including oncology through the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, ophthalmology via Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, and urology through the Desai Sethi Urology Institute. The center is expected to serve over 70,000 patients annually.
AI Integration Across Operations
Dr. Roy Weiss, chief medical officer for ambulatory services at UHealth, told the Herald that AI is embedded in scheduling, insurance verification, and clinical workflows. The facility uses Suki AI ambient dictation, an AI-powered transcription service that records and transcribes patient visits in real time. Physicians can remain fully present during appointments while AI generates clinical notes, suggests diagnoses, and recommends treatments based on current guidelines.
Patients receive a summary of their visit within minutes of leaving the exam room. The system requires patient consent and physician review before finalizing any documentation. Dr. Dipen Parekh, CEO of UHealth, explained that the health system categorizes AI into three areas: improving patient access, increasing workflow efficiency, and improving patient outcomes.
According to the article, AI is also being used in imaging to reduce MRI scan times and in radiation oncology to support treatment planning. UHealth plans to roll out the AI transcription tool to other locations after refining it at SoLé Mia.
Strategic Expansion And Partnerships
The new center is part of UHealth’s broader strategy to expand ambulatory care in high-growth areas. South Florida hospital systems are actively seeking to position services closer to residential populations to improve access, reduce congestion at main campuses, and retain patients long-term.
UHealth is also partnering with Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS), the top-ranked orthopedics hospital in the country. The collaboration will focus on recruiting talent, expanding research, and implementing best practices in musculoskeletal care.
Design And Patient Experience
The facility incorporates natural light, calming artwork, and patient-recommended scents to create a less clinical environment. The seventh floor features 33 private infusion bays with ocean views and a cancer support center offering acupuncture, massage, and survivorship resources. A retail optical store and a public café are located on the first floor.
The center uses check-in kiosks that will eventually incorporate facial recognition technology to streamline registration. According to the report, one patient described the facility as feeling more like a hotel than a hospital.
Why This Matters For Healthcare Leaders
UHealth’s investment reflects the growing role of AI in ambulatory care, particularly in reducing administrative burden and improving clinical efficiency. For healthcare executives, the integration of AI tools into daily workflows represents both an opportunity and a challenge—requiring investments in technology, staff training, and patient communication strategies.
The shift toward large-scale outpatient facilities also signals a broader trend in healthcare delivery. Ambulatory centers offer lower operating costs than inpatient hospitals while generating strong volumes in high-margin service lines like imaging, oncology, and specialty surgery.
From a financial perspective, projects of this scale require careful market analysis, service line planning, and workforce strategy. Healthcare CFOs managing similar expansions should focus on patient mix, reimbursement modeling, and operational efficiency to ensure long-term sustainability.
